OUGH – A string of letters

The grapheme OUGH is one of the toughest in the English language, with at least six different pronunciations. It’s unpredictable and can be a tricky one for students to learn.

This 16-page resource aims to shed light on confusion by separating ‘ough’ words into groups based on the ‘ough’ sound they make.

The string of letters is historical in origin: something we cannot change! Remembering that English is not a phonetic language, the best approach is bank on memorization.

The material is presented to incorporate multi-sensory learning to harness the power of visual, auditory and kinaesthetic learning pathways. This stimulates processing and boosts the retention of information.

Activities include word banks, gap-fill sentences, sentence writing and sentence starters, word sorting and vocabulary pre-teaching. The product has been carefully designed, is fully guided and engages learners from the outset.

Rhyming fun, a crossword puzzle and cut out cards make the learning enjoyable!

Suggestion: print the cut-out cards on stiff paper and laminate for durability and revision purposes.

Go for it- conquer ‘OUGH’!
