Resource Description
Words spelled with KN and GN, the /n/ sound
This resource is a great year 2 to 3-year and home-schooling spelling activity product. Careful design and attention to multi-sensory learning will engage young learners to develop their understanding of silent letters and the n sound.
The activities include gap-fill sentences, a gap-fill story, identification and correction of spelling errors, handwriting and tracing practice and a word search. The student is fully guided throughout the 12-page product. Ample practice and revision, by way of cut-out cards and a uniquely appropriate board game, serve to consolidate the learning.
Students are encouraged to say the words out loud to incorporate the auditory learning pathway. Pictures, colouring activities, word search and games provide an enhanced learning platform for all students.
The ‘KN’, ‘GN’ spelling pattern is derived from ‘Old English’ (hundreds of years ago). This (mildly annoying!) ‘inheritance’ is relatively straightforward and can be learned by practice/ repetition. Fortunately, the phonogram ‘KN’ is found only at the beginning of base words.
Have fun learning!
