This resources contains laws that are interesting to downright odd in other countries and also some in South Africa.
The task at hand is for pupils to discern whether these laws are sensible and should be kept or abolished. They can prepare discussions around it in groups or individually, mind maps and writing preparation or simply an oral task or class debate the options are wide open.
Can be used for Life Orientation (not grade specific) or English Oral / Writing Preparation.

1. You are not allowed to build sandcastles in Spain.
2. Married women can only have one glass of wine in Bolivia.
3. It is illegal to pass wind (fart) in Malawi.
Interesting laws in South Africa:
1. It is illegal for children under 16 to show public displays of affection, eg. Kissing and cuddling. Teens have protested it since 2008 when this law was passed.
2. An unmarried woman automatically assumes all rights and responsibilities for her child if she falls pregnant but the same is not true for an unmarried man. He is only legally responsible if he agrees to it.
3. It is illegal for heavy vehicles (9,000kgs) to be on the road during rush hour (morning and evening).
