Grade 5 SS History (Term 1): The Later Stone Age: The San, Khoikhoi, hunter-gatherers and herders

This bundle (which includes 3x PowerPoint presentations, 2x English Home Languages assessments (essay and comprehension), and background information for the teacher, PLUS a classroom read to kickstart the lessons), introduces authentic archaeological research and media, and covers Social Sciences (History) CAPS on:

• Ways to find out about the past

• How we find out about hunter-gatherers and herders (What the archaeology shows)

• San hunter-gatherer society in the Later Stone Age

• Khoikhoi herder society in the Later Stone Age

• Southern Africa and the Stone Age

• The people living in South Africa when Jan van Riebeek arrived at the Cape

The teaching bundle begins with, three chapters of a fun, adventurous classroom read entitled, WHERE DID YOU GET THAN DINOSAUR?, in which four children travel back in time to the Stone Age of the Karoo. (Note that this reading material  serves as a standalone read, but other chapters detailing the children’s time-travel adventures are available in other resources).

After reading the story to the class, please watch (in the following order):
