In this lesson, students will learn about punk ideologies, specifically DIY as innovation and Activism as message. Using the band, the Clash as a case study, students will learn how punk music is often used for activism. Students will apply their knowledge in an immersive assignment in which small groups create a band, pick an issue, develop a brand, write a song, create instruments from found objects and finally perform the song. Students will leave the lesson understanding the connection between DIY and innovation, as well as how punk activism affects culture.

This is a 3 hour Lesson plan package including a lesson plan, assignment and presentation slides. It can be taught in more than one lesson if you choose.
