Resource Description

An almost tuneful little story specifically designed to reinforce the spelling of /M/ sound words. The rhythm and pace serve to engage young students and facilitate retention.

The ‘m’ consonant sound is made by lightly pressing the lips together while making the /mmm/ sound. The words are commonly spelt with ‘m’, ‘mm’ or ‘mb’ (silent b). The ‘gm’ (as in paradigm) and ‘mn’ (as in column) are less common and not included at this level.

The placement of the letter ‘M’ can be at the beginning, middle or end of a word. The story provides ample opportunities for students to identify, use, say and spell all 3 spellings and placements.

The activity page consolidates /M/sound-spellings and touches on the use of the words in different parts of speech (such as: adjectives, verbs, adverbs).

The story is written to encourage a play with the /M/ words. A focus on the rhythm will assist students to identify and memorize the distinct /M/ sound units, words and phrases from an ongoing story stream.

The learning is fun, especially if students are urged to read the story out loud. Let’s get students tapping their feet to the beat!  The English language is melodious!
