Dotted pictures to improve fine motor skills and pencil control When holding a pencil with a dynamic 3 point pencil grasp, we also need to move the three fingers holding the pencil. This is called refined finger movement of the thumb, index, and middle fingers. Refined finger movements enable controlled movement of the pencil for drawing, writing, and coloring. Dotted pictures provide lots of opportunities to practice refined movements of the writing fingers and improve pencil control.

This resource includes a collection of “dotted pictures” with varying dot sizes to accommodate different ages and skill levels. An occupational therapist developed this resource to provide an activity framework to improve fine motor skills, eye-hand coordination, and pencil control using dotted pictures.
