Words ending -OUS
Resource Description
Words ending -OUS
Words ending with the vowel suffix -OUS can be grouped as follows: (1) words where -OUS is added to the end of a root word (base word) as a suffix and (2) a stand-alone word of meaning (no suffix). The -OUS sound in both cases is ‘’US’’ as in ‘’famous’’.
Sound simple? What’s the catch? When a vowel-suffix is added to a word, spelling rules apply and an entirely new word is formed. Of course, whenever there are spelling rules, there are exceptions too!
The challenge for our Learners involves the spelling, the spelling exceptions, and the changes to word meaning and form (part of speech). When -ous is added to the end of a noun, it becomes an adjective. Although this seems a lot to take on board, it is explicitly explained and revised throughout the product.
This 18-page document aims to elevate young students to a level where they are comfortably confident with the spellings and (in the case of suffixes) resultant word forms. Clear explanations of the grammatical terms ‘suffix, root word, noun, adjective’ are set out from the beginning.
The solid foundation supports the content that follows. This consists of: worksheets, visual cues, spelling rules and tips, word meanings, gap-fill sentences, and sentence writing. Step-by-step guidelines challenge students to write a paragraph using words ending -ous.
Cut-out cards, a game, and riddles assist with revision and retention.
Wishing you an enjoyable and thorough learning journey.
