Resource Description

Spelling ER, IR, UR words

·       Words that growl!

ER, IR and UR make the same sound: /er/. Of all the ‘R controlled’ vowels, these three are the most common.

The ‘R’ following the vowel distorts the vowel sound. The new sound makes the vowel growl like a tiger.  Since the ‘growling r vowels’ <er>, <ir> and <ur> sound the same, spelling words containing these digraphs can be tricky.

This fully guided 18-page resource is sequentially structured to eliminate confusion around the spelling. With plenty of practice and by harnessing the power of visual, auditory, and kinaesthetic learning pathways, students are stimulated to process and retain the learning.

Activities include word banks, gap-fill sentences, word meanings, comparative adjectives (’er’), a story (filled with growl vowels), captions and reading texts.

Trace, colour and cut out worksheets and a game serve to consolidate the learning in an enjoyable manner.

Handy, frequently used, cut-out SIGHT words are provided on the last page.
