Resource Description

Flying High, the trigraph IGH

  • · Long vowel /i/ sound

This resource creates a ‘complete lesson’ on teaching children how to identify, read and write the ‘igh’ vowel trigraph. The 15-page material introduces the ‘igh’ trigraph and the sound that it makes: long vowel /i/sound as in sigh and high.

As children make progress in phonics, they learn that multiple letters (digraphs and trigraphs) can make one sound. IGH is often found in the middle of a word and loves a ‘t’ (as in fight and right).

The activities are designed to engage students from the outset. The learning is fun and effective, making light of the tricky spelling posed by ‘IGH’. Explicit guidance is provided in a multi-sensory fashion throughout the product. Ample practice develops the Learner’s awareness of ‘what looks right’. The new learning embraces variety with the inclusion of word banks, gap-fill sentences, synonyms, rhyming, homophones and an intriguing story.

Rhyming helps children develop language and literacy by helping them pay attention to “end sounds” in words. Colour and trace activities pull the learning together.

A unique spelling game and cut-out cards serve to consolidate the learning.
