Resource Description

PH, WH and QU.

  • Two letters, one sound

This resource dives into the essential topic of consonant digraphs. Commonly used letter combinations are: CH  SH  PH  WH  QU TH. To grasp the concept effectively, the material breaks the exploration down to the mastering of three digraphs: PH, WH, QU.

The term ‘digraph’ simply means ‘two letters coming together to produce one special sound’. Students are encouraged throughout the fully guided product to say the words and listen to the sounds. Colouring and tracing have been included to embed the spelling in a multi-sensory fashion.

Activities include words banks, word sorts, gap-fill sentences, word meanings, and synonyms. Each digraph is introduced with a ‘silly sentence’. The surprising sentences engage learners, support the development of sentence writing and serve as an ‘anchor’ for the retention of key examples of important grammar concepts.

The five question words: ‘who, what, why, where, when’ are accompanied with follow-up sentences to include context and ensure a comfortable understanding.

An amusing story, a game and cut-out word lists consolidate the learning in an enjoyable manner.
