Resource Description

We have come to understand how reading takes place in the brain through outstanding brain research. We know that memorising words is not how we learn to read. We also know that a lot of words that we have been encouraging our early readers to memorise are in fact decodable. We need to teach our students the code and provide them with a key that will help them access these words without relying on our sometimes-fallible working memory. This resource encourages students to decode high-frequency words by sounding, mapping and tapping the phonemes in the words. It contains 14 high-frequency words that you can explicitly teach to help your students start building and reading simple sentences once you start your phonics programme.
