Measuring at the Zoo – Non-standard units
Resource Description
This is a hands-on, interactive activity that introduces the language of measurement with regards to length and width, as well as comparisons and degrees of comparison using length and width. Various non-standard items such as paperclips, beans, fingers and Unifix blocks are used. Estimation and discussion are encouraged with findings recorded in tables if the concept at a higher level. The cards can be used from Grade R to 2. It would also give an introduction to standards measurements in centimeters in Grade 3. It is suggested that learners work in pairs while teachers monitor progress and ask questions to explore deeper understanding such as “Why do you think that is?”
