Resource Description

Carteles para El Salon de Clases / Labels Around the Classroom

In this era of constantly new technologies, the most traditional didactic resources are still needed to motivate children and assist them with teaching-learning.  Posters and murals are graphic materials representing a communication system print made to say something understood at first sight. They show more information and important aspects of a particular topic and can represent a visually appealing scheme of the contents worked on at school. Its educational potential makes them very useful in all areas, but especially in the area of Knowledge of the Environment since they can be understood as ‘windows to the reality that is out there’. Labeling the classroom and making posters or murals involves synthesizing, organizing, analyzing, and presenting information that must be understood by the person who sees it concisely and entertainingly and facilitating the study of the topics, allowing ordering the ideas, helping to reinforce the most important concepts and consolidating acquired knowledge before and during the learning process. In addition, they serve to evaluate and remember the content worked, taking into account diversity, because each student works according to their pace. They also encourage student participation in their own learning, through an active methodology, combining group work and cooperation with the positive competition. On the other hand, we must not forget that they are a cheap and accessible resource in the school environment, easy to handle and make up, which also allows the development of creativity, through different plastic techniques (drawing, painting, cutting, gluing, chopping, collage) and materials.

Instructions for the support material to work with Spanish as a Second Language during classroom activities.

1. Print the entire following material; preferably on 8.5”x 11” Cardstock. Laminate the material for more durability.

2. Post the material needed at a visible height for your students (sitting).

3. Try not to overwhelm the walls, posting only the material you will be working with. Place the rest of the material (cards with pictures, signs, months, days, calendars, holidays, pledge allegiance, birthdays, jobs, helpers, letters, numbers, weather, shapes, rules, emotions, and classroom labels) in a folder or envelope, so they are ready for when you need them.

4. You could work with the whole group using an Elmo projector and subject cards; reading and repeating the target vocabulary.

5. Also, you could place cards in a center for children to read and write Spanish vocabulary words as they go through the station. Make sure, you also have paper, pencils, and colors as well.
