Resource Description
Mathematics Investigation: Exploring Number Patterns (Grade 5 – Term 2)
This CAPS-aligned Mathematics Investigation has been carefully designed to support the Term 2 content focus on Numeric Patterns, as outlined in the 2025 Annual Teaching Plan (ATP) for Grade 5. It serves as an introductory, discovery-based activity that allows learners to explore, describe, and reflect on number patterns using their own reasoning and language — as recommended by the curriculum.
The investigation focuses specifically on the following key content areas:
-
Investigating and extending number patterns (including patterns not limited to constant difference or ratio),
-
Describing observed relationships or rules in learners’ own words,
-
Creating and working with learner-generated patterns.
Through guided pattern analysis and reflective questioning, learners are encouraged to:
-
Identify how a pattern changes (whether it increases by the same amount or grows in a different way),
-
Extend number sequences by following a discovered rule,
-
Express the pattern rule in words, number sentences, or tables,
-
Reflect critically on how patterns work and how they discovered the rules.
