Bird Beak Shapes and Diet: Sorting Activity, Differentiated, Real Photos

This is an excellent resource to accompany a unit on adaptations, a nature study on birds, or when discussing diet and what animals eat.

The resource includes 24 closeup photos of different bird’s beaks as well as 6 different diet types (small animals, fish, seeds, nectar, fruit, and nuts) for sorting. You can either print the diet type headers and allow students to sort the birds freely or give students the mat with a control of 4 birds per diet type. (Differentiated options)

This resource encourages critical thinking skills and can be used for individual work or group work stimulating discussion and conversation as children sort through different photos of bird beaks to discern the bird’s diet.
